GENDER AND THE OFFICE QUALIFICATIONS OF AN ELDER IN THE NEW TESTAMENT: ARE WOMEN QUALIFIED TO HOLD THE OFFICE OF ELDER?

ebook
The issue of women elders is one of the most divisive in evangelical circles today. There are major divisions among denominations and churches on the issue of whether a woman can hold the office of elder/pastor in the local church. Two opposing views have emerged: complementarianism and egalitarianism. Complementarians argue that, while men and women are equal in essence and value, they are different in roles and functions. One of those differences is that God has entrusted to men the role of leadership in the home and the church. And since the office of elder is a manifestation of leadership in the church, only qualified men can hold such an office. Egalitarians believe that roles and functions in the church are based on qualifications, regardless of gender. Women can fulfill all ministries in the church, including the office of elder. Proponents on both sides of the debate claim to argue their view based on Scripture.
